Mercedes-Benz G-Class Roof Rack Tent Buyers Guide

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is probably one of the most luxurious vehicles you can buy. The G-Wagon is ideal for the daily drive through the city, but also ideal for exploring the countryside at the weekend.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class also offers the possibility of finding campgrounds off the beaten track. You also have enough space in the vehicle to take your whole family plus camping equipment with you.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class would have enough power to tow a large camping trailer, but this is not necessary. You can mount a large rooftop tent on the vehicle roof of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and sleep safely on the roof of the G-Wagon.

The vehicle roof is large enough to mount a six-person rooftop tent on the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. You can of course choose between a soft-shell or hard-shell rooftop tent. You can also choose the size freely. If you go camping alone or with just two people, a three-person rooftop tent will suffice. However, if you have a large family that is going camping with you, you can also mount a large six-person rooftop tent on the roof of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class.

Another advantage is that if you sleep on the vehicle roof, you are safe from small and large animals. You are also protected from the nightly cold that comes out of the ground.

All you need to set up a rooftop tent on the roof of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class are roof crossbars. These crossbars are mounted on the G-Wagon’s factory roof rails. If your G-Wagon does not have factory roof rails, you can of course easily retrofit these roof rails. The roof rails are attached to the vehicle roof. There are already original screw holes that are intended for this.

The crossbars are connected to the roof rails and thus provide a platform for mounting the rooftop tent. The roof tent is then connected to the crossbars at four mounting spots. This creates a secure and stable connection between the roof tent and the vehicle.

The registered maximum roof load of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class is relatively low, but this always refers to the moving vehicle (e.g. if you have a roof box mounted on the roof). However, as soon as the vehicle is stationary, the permissible roof load increases many times over. This means that up to six people can stay on the vehicle roof, in the rooftop tent, without any problems.

The additional weight of the tent and the people is then optimally dissipated via the roof rails to the entire vehicle body. This way there is no damage to the vehicle.

However, you should note that when the rooftop tent is mounted, fuel consumption increases, and the maximum range decreases. The driving characteristics also deteriorate as the vehicle’s center of gravity shifts further upwards.

So you should only set up the rooftop tent when you really need it!
