The Porsche 911 is probably one of the most popular sports cars in the world. But did you know that you can also go camping with the 911?
If you drive to the campground in a Porsche 911 (regardless of the year of manufacture), this probably makes more of an impression than if you go camping with a camping trailer or an RV.
It is possible to mount a rooftop tent on the roof of the Porsche and sleep safely and relaxed on the vehicle roof.
To install a rooftop tent on the Porsche 911, you need roof rails that are screwed to the factory roof rail mounting spots. Depending on the design, you will then need roof crossbars to mount the roof tent. If you have connected the rooftop tent to the crossbars at four mounting spots, a very secure and firm connection to the vehicle is created.
The permissible roof load of the Porsche is relatively low, but this always refers to the vehicle in motion. As soon as the vehicle is stationary, the permissible roof load of the Porsche increases many times over. So it is possible to install a rooftop tent on the roof of the Porsche 911 and four adults can stay and sleep in the rooftop tent.
You have the option to buy a hard-shell or soft-shell rooftop tent. A hard-shell rooftop tent usually has a smaller interior space than a soft-shell rooftop tent.
When buying a rooftop tent for the Porsche 911, you should also make sure that the rooftop tent is not wider than the vehicle when folded.
You should also note that if you drive around with the rooftop tent, fuel consumption increases, and the possible range decreases. This is because the mounted rooftop tent on the roof of the Porsche 911 negatively affects the aerodynamics.
The driving dynamics of the vehicle also deteriorate because the vehicle’s center of gravity is shifted further upwards.
You should therefore only assemble the rooftop tent when you really need it. Otherwise, you should safely store it in the garage.
Another advantage of a rooftop tent is that you are safe from small and large animals on the vehicle roof. Likewise, you no longer have to sleep directly on the hard and cold floor. This makes a rooftop tent much more comfortable than a ground tent. It is also possible to install a solar panel on top of the roof tent to generate your own electricity. There is so much more you can do with a rooftop tent… you’re more mobile with a rooftop tent than a big RV and more flexible than with a camping trailer.
The Porsche 911 offers enough space on the roof to mount a two to four-person rooftop tent. All Porsche 911 models offer a mounting point for roof rails, where you can then attach the crossbars, which then carry the rooftop tent.

When buying roof rails, make sure they are of good quality. You can buy the roof rails and roof crossbars for the Porsche 911 online, but you can also buy the roof rails from your local Porsche dealer and have them installed directly there.
It also doesn’t matter which 911 model you own, you can also install the roof rails on a GT3 or GT2 model. Where there are likely to be problems is with the Targa models that have a glass roof.
