The Audi A4 is a great car for the city and also for travel. The A4 also offers plenty of interior space to take your whole family with you. But did you know that the Audi A4 is also perfect for your next camping trip? You can set up a rooftop tent on the roof of the A4 and spontaneously head to the next campground.

A rooftop tent has many advantages over a ground-based tent, but also over a heavy camping trailer or an expensive RV. With a roof tent, you are very flexible and can spend the night in a different place every day if you wish. A rooftop tent also offers protection from small and large animals due to its elevated position on the vehicle roof. With a rooftop tent, you can also reach campgrounds that you could never reach with a camping trailer or an RV. The rooftop tent also offers better insulation from the cold than a ground tent. The material of a rooftop tent is much higher quality and thicker, which better protects you from the cold.

You have the option of installing a large three to four-person rooftop tent on the roof of the Audi A4. You can install either a hard-shell or soft-shell rooftop tent on the roof. A hard-shell rooftop tent is usually quicker to set up than a soft-shell rooftop tent. However, a soft-shell rooftop tent offers more space inside and usually has more features.

All you need to mount a rooftop tent on the roof of the Audi A4 are the appropriate roof rails and roof crossbars. The roof rails are bolted directly to the vehicle roof. There are screw holes on the roof of the Audi A4 factory for this purpose. The roof crossbars are attached to the roof rails and thus provide a stable platform for the assembly of the rooftop tent (some rooftop tents are also screwed directly onto the roof rails, then of course you don’t need crossbars).

The weight of the roof tent and the people in the rooftop tent is transferred to the vehicle body via the roof rails. So neither the roof nor the body of the vehicle is damaged.

All rooftop tents have a built-in telescopic ladder. You can use this ladder to get into the rooftop tent and back out of the rooftop tent.

The registered permissible roof load of the Audi A4 is relatively low, but this always refers to the vehicle in motion. This is important, for example, when transporting a roof box or other loads on the roof of the Audi. As soon as the vehicle is stationary, however, the permissible roof load increases many times over and you can set up the rooftop tent and use it with several people without hesitation.

As soon as you no longer need the rooftop tent, it is recommended that you dismantle the rooftop tent and store it safely in your garage since the rooftop tent increases the fuel consumption of your vehicle and thus reduces the maximum range. Driving behavior is also negatively influenced by a roof tent, as the vehicle’s center of gravity is shifted further upwards. So you always have to drive very carefully when you are traveling with a rooftop tent.

Further down on this page, you will find a few examples of the most popular rooftop tents for the Audi A4.

Is it difficult to install a roof rack tent?

No! On the contrary, with most models you only have to screw the underside of the tent floor to the roof rack of your vehicle. The best way to do this is with two people, as the roof rack tent is relatively heavy. After you have tightened all the screws properly, you can put full load on the tent.

Is it difficult to clean the tent?

No, you can easily clean the outside of the tent with water and a little detergent. The inside of the tent is also best cleaned with soap and water. Make sure that the inside of the tent is completely dry before you fold it up and store it. Otherwise it could happen that mold could form in the tent due to the high humidity.

How many people can sleep on the roof of the car in the tent?

It all depends on the size of the tent. You can also sleep with three people in a two-person tent. The weight does not play such a big role here, as the tent is not supported on the roof of the car, but on the supporting pillars (A-pillar & C-pillar) of the car or truck. This means that the weight is always evenly distributed over the entire vehicle.
