Subaru Legacy Roof Rack Tent Buyers Guide

The Subaru Legacy is ideal for spending a great weekend camping. The Subaru Legacy offers enough space to take the whole family with you and also enough space in the trunk to take camping equipment with you.

With the Subaru Legacy, you have the option of mounting a large four-person rooftop tent on the vehicle roof so that you can sleep at a safe height, protected from dirt and animals.

A rooftop tent offers the great advantage that you no longer have to sleep on the floor as with a ground tent. In this way, the cold and moisture from the ground are no longer transferred to the tent. You are also protected from animals with a rooftop tent.

To mount a rooftop tent on the Subaru Legacy you only need roof rails and roof crossbars. Once you have attached these to your vehicle, the roof tent is connected to the crossbars at four mounting spots. In this way, the rooftop tent is securely and stably connected to the vehicle.

The weight of the rooftop tent and the people in the rooftop tent is optimally transferred to the entire vehicle body via the roof rails. In this way, the vehicle is not damaged.

Although the permitted roof load for the Subaru Legacy is relatively low in the vehicle registration document, this is normal since this information relates to the moving vehicle.

As soon as the vehicle is stationary, the permissible roof load is many times higher. So four adults can stay in the rooftop tent without any problems.

When buying a new rooftop tent for the Subaru Legacy, you should make sure that the roof tent is not wider than the vehicle when folded. However, most four-person rooftop tents are quite narrow when folded.

Note that the additional weight of the rooftop tent can negatively affect the driving characteristics of the Subaru Legacy, as the vehicle’s entire center of gravity is shifted further upwards. You should therefore be careful with fast corners.

Likewise, fuel consumption is negatively affected if you have installed a rooftop tent on the roof. The additional roof tent, therefore, reduces the range. If you are not using the rooftop tent, you should therefore always dismantle it and store it in the garage and only assemble it when you really go camping.

Is it difficult to install a roof rack tent?

No! On the contrary, with most models you only have to screw the underside of the tent floor to the roof rack of your vehicle. The best way to do this is with two people, as the roof rack tent is relatively heavy. After you have tightened all the screws properly, you can put full load on the tent.

Is it difficult to clean the tent?

No, you can easily clean the outside of the tent with water and a little detergent. The inside of the tent is also best cleaned with soap and water. Make sure that the inside of the tent is completely dry before you fold it up and store it. Otherwise it could happen that mold could form in the tent due to the high humidity.

How many people can sleep on the roof of the car in the tent?

It all depends on the size of the tent. You can also sleep with three people in a two-person tent. The weight does not play such a big role here, as the tent is not supported on the roof of the car, but on the supporting pillars (A-pillar & C-pillar) of the car or truck. This means that the weight is always evenly distributed over the entire vehicle.

I sold my RV and bought a jeep with a roof rack tent mounted on it. That was the best decision i ever made. I can pitch my tent anywhere in the desert with my jeep and spend the night there. I would never have come to these places with my RV.

My friend and I bought a roof tent for our car and now drive it almost every weekend into the wilderness and pitch our tent where it suits us. We're just excited about our new roof rack tent and never want to go camping without a roof tent again.
