The Audi Q5 is the perfect vehicle for the city but also for the camping trip at the weekend. If you own an Audi Q5, you don’t need a camping trailer or expensive RV to experience the next camping adventure with the whole family.

The Audi Q5 offers enough space inside to take the whole family with you and also the necessary camping equipment. The Q5 also has enough space on the roof to set up a large rooftop tent. With a rooftop tent, you always have a comfortable place to sleep with you.

A rooftop tent also has the great advantage that you are much more mobile than with a large camping trailer or RV. You can discover completely new campgrounds that you would never reach otherwise. Likewise, sleeping on the vehicle roof also has the advantage that you are safe from small and large animals. But of course, you are also safe from water or rain that collects on the ground.

The Audi Q5 even offers enough space on the roof to mount a large six-person rooftop tent (of course you can also mount a smaller roof tent…). So you can take your whole family or friends with you on the next camping adventure.

All you need to mount a rooftop tent on the roof of the Audi Q5 are roof rails and roof crossbars. Depending on the year and model, your Q5 may already have a factory roof rail. If not, you can easily retrofit them. Then all you have to do is attach the roof crossbars to the roof rails to create a solid base for installing the rooftop tent.

The rooftop tent is connected to the crossbars at four mounting spots. In this way, the rooftop tent is securely and stably connected to the vehicle. Every rooftop tent connects to the vehicle in the same way, so you don’t have to worry about that when buying a rooftop tent.

For example, you can mount a hard-shell or soft-shell rooftop tent on the roof of the Audi Q5. A hard-shell rooftop tent is easier to set up but usually doesn’t offer as much interior space as a soft-shell rooftop tent. If you choose a soft-shell rooftop tent, you will find more space and features inside the tent. However, erecting a soft-shell rooftop tent takes a little longer. In general, however, you can assume that you can set up a soft-shell roof tent in just a few minutes.

The registered permissible roof load of the Audi Q5 is relatively low, but this only applies to the vehicle in motion. This is important if you are installing a roof box, for example, or want to transport other loads on the vehicle roof.

However, as soon as the vehicle is standing still, the permissible roof load increases many times over. So you can also set up a large six-person rooftop tent.

The weight of the roof tent and the people in the tent is optimally distributed to the vehicle body via the crossbars and the roof rails. This way the vehicle will not be damaged.

But of course, you can decide for yourself whether you need such a large tent or whether you would rather buy a smaller two or four-person rooftop tent.

There are also rooftop tents that have an awning, so you have an additional practical space that can also protect you from rain or wind.

Further down on this page, you will also find a small overview of the most popular roof tents for the Audi Q5.

You always have the option of equipping your rooftop tent with additional features. For example, you can install lamps in the interior or even mount a solar panel on the vehicle roof. So you always have your own electricity, even in remote locations.

Please note, however, that the fuel consumption will increase due to the rooftop tent being installed, thus reducing the maximum range of your vehicle. The handling of the Audi Q5 can also deteriorate as the vehicle’s center of gravity shifts further upwards. Therefore, you should always drive very carefully with a rooftop tent and think about the higher fuel consumption.

Is it difficult to install a roof rack tent?

No! On the contrary, with most models you only have to screw the underside of the tent floor to the roof rack of your vehicle. The best way to do this is with two people, as the roof rack tent is relatively heavy. After you have tightened all the screws properly, you can put full load on the tent.

Is it difficult to clean the tent?

No, you can easily clean the outside of the tent with water and a little detergent. The inside of the tent is also best cleaned with soap and water. Make sure that the inside of the tent is completely dry before you fold it up and store it. Otherwise it could happen that mold could form in the tent due to the high humidity.

How many people can sleep on the roof of the car in the tent?

It all depends on the size of the tent. You can also sleep with three people in a two-person tent. The weight does not play such a big role here, as the tent is not supported on the roof of the car, but on the supporting pillars (A-pillar & C-pillar) of the car or truck. This means that the weight is always evenly distributed over the entire vehicle.

I sold my RV and bought a jeep with a roof rack tent mounted on it. That was the best decision i ever made. I can pitch my tent anywhere in the desert with my jeep and spend the night there. I would never have come to these places with my RV.

My friend and I bought a roof tent for our car and now drive it almost every weekend into the wilderness and pitch our tent where it suits us. We're just excited about our new roof rack tent and never want to go camping without a roof tent again.
