The BMW 6 Series is a very luxurious vehicle that is ideal for accompanying you in the city. But you also have the opportunity to experience a great camping trip with the BMW 6 Series. The BMW has a large interior that allows you to take your whole family with you.

With your BMW 6 Series, you don’t need a camping trailer or your own RV to experience a great camping weekend. All you need is a rooftop tent, which you can mount on the roof of the BMW 6 Series.

A rooftop tent offers many advantages over a ground tent, but also a camping trailer or an RV. You can set up and fold up a rooftop tent very quickly. Another advantage of a rooftop tent is that you sleep on the roof of the vehicle and are therefore safe from small and large animals. You are also safe from water or rain that can collect on the ground. Modern rooftop tents also offer many practical features, such as many pockets or high-quality materials that insulate the tent.

The rooftop tent is also very quick to set up and take down. Once you have used the rooftop tent a few times, you will be able to set it up and take it down in just a few minutes.

For example, there are hard-shell or soft-shell rooftop tents that you can mount on the vehicle roof.

All you need to install a rooftop tent on the roof of the BMW 6 Series are the appropriate roof rails and roof crossbars.

The roof rails are screwed to the factory mounting points on the roof of the BMW. In this way, the roof rails are connected to the vehicle body with absolute stability. Then the crossbars are screwed to the roof rails to provide a stable base for the rooftop tent.

The rooftop tent is then screwed to four mounting spots on the crossbars. Each rooftop tent requires the same assembly. So it doesn’t matter which rooftop tent model you buy.

I recommend that you buy a maximum of one four-person rooftop tent for the BMW 6 Series. With larger rooftop tents, there is a risk that the roof tent will be wider than the vehicle.

The registered permissible roof load of the BMW 6 Series is relatively low, but this always refers to the driving condition (this is important if you are installing a roof box, for example). However, when the BMW 6 Series is standing still, the permissible roof load increases many times over. Four adults can stay or sleep on the roof of the BMW 6 Series in the rooftop tent without any problems. The additional weight is optimally distributed over the entire vehicle body via the roof rails. The roof or the vehicle will not be damaged by the rooftop tent.

Further down on this page, you will find a small overview of the most popular rooftop tents for the BMW 6 Series.

However, you must note that installing a roof tent on the BMW 6 Series increases fuel consumption and reduces the maximum range. The handling will also deteriorate due to the additional weight on the roof. You should therefore only assemble the rooftop tent when you really need it and otherwise store it safely in the garage.

Is it difficult to install a roof rack tent?

No! On the contrary, with most models you only have to screw the underside of the tent floor to the roof rack of your vehicle. The best way to do this is with two people, as the roof rack tent is relatively heavy. After you have tightened all the screws properly, you can put full load on the tent.

Is it difficult to clean the tent?

No, you can easily clean the outside of the tent with water and a little detergent. The inside of the tent is also best cleaned with soap and water. Make sure that the inside of the tent is completely dry before you fold it up and store it. Otherwise it could happen that mold could form in the tent due to the high humidity.

How many people can sleep on the roof of the car in the tent?

It all depends on the size of the tent. You can also sleep with three people in a two-person tent. The weight does not play such a big role here, as the tent is not supported on the roof of the car, but on the supporting pillars (A-pillar & C-pillar) of the car or truck. This means that the weight is always evenly distributed over the entire vehicle.

I sold my RV and bought a jeep with a roof rack tent mounted on it. That was the best decision i ever made. I can pitch my tent anywhere in the desert with my jeep and spend the night there. I would never have come to these places with my RV.

My friend and I bought a roof tent for our car and now drive it almost every weekend into the wilderness and pitch our tent where it suits us. We're just excited about our new roof rack tent and never want to go camping without a roof tent again.
