The BMW 5 Series is one of the best vehicles for the city, but also for weekend tours. Whether you own a sedan or a touring, with the BMW 5 Series you have enough space to transport your whole family.

If you’re a lucky BMW 5 Series owner, you don’t need a big camping trailer or even an RV to have great camping trips. The BMW offers enough space inside to take a lot of camping equipment with you, but the BMW also offers enough space on the vehicle roof to set up a rooftop tent and thus undertake spontaneous camping trips.

The big advantage of owning a rooftop tent is that you are very mobile and don’t have to tow a heavy camping trailer. With the BMW 5 Series, you can also reach campgrounds that you could never reach with a camping trailer or an RV. A rooftop tent also offers many advantages over a conventional ground tent. Due to the elevated position on the vehicle roof, you are safe from small and large animals, for example. In a rooftop tent, you are also safe from rain or water that collects on the ground. As you can see, a rooftop tent for the BMW 5 Series has many advantages.

All you need to mount a rooftop tent on the roof of the BMW 5 Series are vehicle-specific roof rails (if your vehicle does not have factory roof rails, you can easily retrofit these roof rails) and roof crossbars. The crossbars are attached to the roof rails and thus provide a stable base to carry the rooftop tent.

The BMW 5 Series offers enough space on the roof to mount a four-person rooftop tent. When choosing a rooftop tent for the BMW, you should make sure that the roof tent is not wider than the vehicle when folded. Further down on this page, you will also find a few example rooftop tents that you can mount on the BMW 5 Series.

In general, all rooftop tents are mounted on the vehicle roof. The rooftop tent is connected to the crossbars at four mounting spots and is thus securely and stably connected to the vehicle.

The registered permissible roof load of the BMW 5 Series is relatively low, but this always refers to the vehicle in motion (this is important if you are transporting a roof box or similar on the vehicle roof). However, as soon as the vehicle is stationary, the permissible roof load increases many times over. So you can easily mount a large four-person rooftop tent on the roof of the BMW.

The additional weight from the rooftop tent and the people staying or sleeping in the rooftop tent is optimally dissipated to the entire vehicle body via the roof rails. This way your vehicle will not be damaged by the additional weight of the rooftop tent and the people.

But you have to make sure that the fuel consumption increases and the maximum range is reduced. It is also possible that the driving behavior of the BMW deteriorates because the vehicle’s center of gravity shifts further upwards.

So you should always drive very carefully with the rooftop tent and also think about the higher fuel consumption. If possible, you should only assemble the rooftop tent when you really need it and otherwise store it safely in your garage.

Is it difficult to install a roof rack tent?

No! On the contrary, with most models you only have to screw the underside of the tent floor to the roof rack of your vehicle. The best way to do this is with two people, as the roof rack tent is relatively heavy. After you have tightened all the screws properly, you can put full load on the tent.

Is it difficult to clean the tent?

No, you can easily clean the outside of the tent with water and a little detergent. The inside of the tent is also best cleaned with soap and water. Make sure that the inside of the tent is completely dry before you fold it up and store it. Otherwise it could happen that mold could form in the tent due to the high humidity.

How many people can sleep on the roof of the car in the tent?

It all depends on the size of the tent. You can also sleep with three people in a two-person tent. The weight does not play such a big role here, as the tent is not supported on the roof of the car, but on the supporting pillars (A-pillar & C-pillar) of the car or truck. This means that the weight is always evenly distributed over the entire vehicle.

I sold my RV and bought a jeep with a roof rack tent mounted on it. That was the best decision i ever made. I can pitch my tent anywhere in the desert with my jeep and spend the night there. I would never have come to these places with my RV.

My friend and I bought a roof tent for our car and now drive it almost every weekend into the wilderness and pitch our tent where it suits us. We're just excited about our new roof rack tent and never want to go camping without a roof tent again.
