How to find the right sleeping bag

Hood

A good hood has an enormous influence on the warmth of the sleeping bag. It must fit everywhere, be full, and it must not press anywhere. An additional chamber along the cord (heat bulge) protects the cheeks and nose from icy air.

Warm collar

The thermal collar wraps around your neck like a scarf and prevents the warm air from escaping from the sleeping bag. People who are afraid of claustrophobia and do not close the hood except for a small opening at night need a particularly thick thermal collar.

Cover strip

How warm does a sleeping bag have to be?

For tours in midsummer a temperature range of up to 50ºF is sufficient, in the mountains up to 32ºF. For treks from spring to fall, choose a three-season sleeping bag with a warmth of up to 23ºF. If you freeze extremely quickly or sleep without a hood, subtract 50 to 59ºF from these recommendations.

When specifying temperature, orientate yourself on comfort (red) or limit (orange, see graphic), never on extreme values. The comfort limit applies to sleepers who freeze quickly, the limit to hotheads. This information is only intended as a guide, as everyone reacts differently to the cold!

Synthetic fiber or down?

Down sleeping bags are extremely cozy and can be packed up to 30 percent lighter and smaller than synthetic sleeping bags with the same thermal output. They last forever, but they also cost a lot. Important: A down sleeping bag must be aired for at least 30 to 60 minutes every morning. If you don’t do this, down loses its insulating properties in just a few days.

If after a few days the sleeping bag is no longer as firm as it was at the beginning of the tour, you have to ventilate it thoroughly for several hours immediately. Then he is fully efficient again.
